Friendship bracelet has been a major item in middle school
for a long time. There are a lot of methods used in making theses bracelet,
from knotted threads to plastic lanyards to interlocking, it seems that each
generation has it’s unique way of making friendship bracelets, and is has been
seen as a symbol of friendship among 2 or more persons.
A product called Jewelbots aim to elevate the friendship
bracelets a fashionable item to an educative tool for young kids, the coding
aspect of the bracelet was the main goal of Sara chipps and Brooke Moreland,
both are the co-founders of jewelbots, Chipps, the CEO of jewelbots has been
coding before she became a teenage, in 2010 Chipps founded a non-profit
organization called “Girl develop it”, which teaches adult women coding for a
low cost but she stop after overhearing the women wishing they had learnt it
earlier.
An idea came up and she designed a bracelet that could
change color based on the user’s outfit but the bracelet fell flat in the
testing groups and the testers became bored.
So Chipps asked for the advice of the testers, Chipps came
up with jewelbots. The components of the bracelets are simple enough;
Electronics
LED lights
Plastic charm
Bluetooth
The awesome part of these bracelets is that it can glow in a
unique way when a particular friend is around. The girls can also send messages
through lights and vibrations. The users can program the jewelbots to respond
to almost everything like a new Instagram post or changes in weather. Jewelbots
communicate via Bluetooth, if the users feel insecure or unsafe; the bracelet
has been programmed to send a text to a parent or guardian
Jewelbots can be ordered for 69 USD on the company website
and the bracelet are expected to being shipping during this fall.
